Essential Bike Maintenance Tools

Owning essential bike tools is invaluable for anyone who likes to maintain and repair their bike by themselves. Basic bike servicing is one of the skills that every cyclist should master, whether for regular maintenance or to handle minor repairs quickly. So what should you get so that you too can carry out basic servicing at home with confidence and reliability? Hex and Torx Wrenches
Hex and torx wrenches are an absolute must for your basic equipment. You can use them on almost every bike (you won't need them on your grandma's old Liberta though :). However, it is very important to have the correct size of these wrenches to avoid damaging parts. You can get them as a set or individually. Of the individual ones, we especially recommend the T25 torx, which you will use mainly on brake discs.
Chain and Cassette Tool
A chain splitter, chain checker and pliers are essential for chain replacement. The checker will check if the chain needs to be replaced, the splitter and pliers will be useful for the actual replacement or cleaning of the chain.
When replacing the cassette, you need to have a cassette puller called a chain whip and a puller for the cassette lockring. This wrench is compatible with the Center Lock brake disc locking screw, which only has a larger outer diameter, but the inner grooves are the same. You can of course also use a classic HG puller.Bottom Bracket Tools
If you have a Shimano bottom bracket, then the SH Hollowtech II  wrench will be super useful. If you have a bottom bracket on your road bike, or if you have newer Shimano cranks with a direct derailleur mount on your mountain bike, then you're more likely to use this  three-sided wrench.

Pedal tools
Occasionally, pedals need to be removed for servicing or replacement. And if you want to be prepared for all the alternatives, get a 15-pedal wrench with a 6/8 hex wrench.

Pliers
It's better to use special pliers for cables and bowdens. For cable ties, you're better off with these pair of pliers, as they have a flat blade and will cut the tie precisely.Tools for brakes
If you want to do a complete service on your hydraulic brakes, you'll need a multi-wrench for spreading the brake pads or straightening the disc, if necessary. Then a bleeding kit depending on the type of brakes. A hose cutter is a big help. For mechanical brakes, you'll need a standard hex wrench or a side wrench.
Torque wrench
The torque wrench is a great help, especially for lightweight and high-end components. It is important to set the  torque precisely and not over-tighten the components. Learn how to do this in this video:

When mounting carbon components, it is necessary to use lubricants. Either in a spray or in a form of paste depending on preference.

Other essentials
A grease and its opposite - degreaser - must not be missing in every workshop or toolbox. Then there are wipes or an old t-shirt to give it a new life. Various adhesive tapes and electrical tape will also serve you well. Another useful tool is a calliper to find out the exact dimensions.
